Ship Tavern

Model ships, mahogany and prime rib, open in the Brown Palace since 1934.

Opened the year after Prohibition ended and barely touched since: a low room behind mahogany doors on the Brown Palace's ground floor, hung with model ships, brass and old maps, with a bar that has been serving the same city for ninety years. The kitchen runs a heavy American menu, prime rib and steaks and a good burger, and the servers have often been there long enough to remember your parents. It is not cheap and it is not trying to be new. It is the downtown room to take someone who wants Denver to look like Denver.

Why go. Ninety years of the same bar, and it still fills on a Tuesday.

Sit at the bar rather than a table; the bartenders are the reason the room works and no reservation is needed there.
